In a Kurdish-language statement, Hakkı Boltan had criticized the president after a journalist was killed during the urban conflict in Kurdish regions in 2015-16.

Hakkı Boltan has said,“Journalism is a must in this region. People are aware that there is no life without journalism. They know that freedom and rights are directly connected to press. The government does not understand that.”

The Diyarbakır 12th Penal Court of First Instance has ruled that Hakkı Boltan shall be sentenced to 2 years, 17 days in prison on the grounds that he allegedly insulted President Erdoğan and the then PM Davutoğlu in his press statement during curfews.

Boltan was put on trial on the grounds that his name was mentioned in the list of delegates seized in a police raid on the office of Democratic Society Congress (DTK). He was facing up to 15 years in prison.

In its report on rights violations committed against journalists in October, Free Journalists Initiative has emphasized that the murder of Bağdu, who was working for Azadiya Welat newspaper and died in an armed attack four years ago, has not yet been brought to light.
